I can't see the IMs that im sending over to someone, I also can't hear the avitars?

When I type something into the space, i can see it, but when i send it, I can't see what I have sent in the conversation box, the person I sent it to can see it. My avitar is also silent on my side but my friends can hear what Ive sent. How do I fix this?
