What is going on with the killings in the US?

I live in Canada but I've been reading all these news about police officers getting killed in Oakland and Pittsburgh, and that senseless murders in that immigration depot, and I understand that we canadians shouldn't in to US situations, but as a human being I'm pretty concerned about these senseless killings. Now what i don't understand is, why do Americans love their guns so much as to not accept gun regulations?
