Why did Jerald Ford pardon Nixon vs holding him accountable for his misdeeds?

Gerald Ford was intelligent enough (even if the liberal media wasn't) to know that the country needed healing, to put the Nixon years behind us, and to move forward instead of focusing on something that could not be changed.
